Facebook Timeline to become default profile in next few weeks

image description

Facebook has announced in an updated blog post that its new profile design, Timeline, will become default profile format for all users over the next few weeks.
The social network, which is predicted to have more than 1 billion users this year, had unveiledTimeline profile format at the f8 conference in September last year. Timeline is a media-rich profile page, featuring activities of a user on the social networking site in a chronological order. Users could earlier activate the Timeline feature by “liking” the Facebook Developer app and accessing the platform as a developer. The Timeline officially became available for all users to try out on December 15.
But now that winds of changes are blowing across the social networking site, the new format will soon become permanent. In case you stayed away from the Timeline so far, it's high time you get acquainted with it. According to the Facebook updated blog post, users will be given a week to try the new layout. The grace period will give users sometime to edit or hide anything they want before it is viewed by their friends.
“Last year we introduced timeline, a new kind of profile that lets you highlight the photos, posts and life events that help you tell your story. Over the next few weeks, everyone will get timeline. When you get timeline, you'll have 7 days to preview what's there now,” says Facebook engineer Paul McDonald in the blog post.

Facebook raises limit on status updates to over 60,000 characters

image description
Facebook is going to leave no stone unturned to maintain its dominance in the social networking segment. Earlier this year, it rolled out a series of updates, including video chat serviceticker andtimeline. And now the social networking site has turned its attention towards the “status update” section. Facebook has increased the maximum length of its 'status update' to more than 60,000 characters ( 63,206 to be precise), 12 times of what it used to be.
However, it's not the first time when the social networking site has expanded the status limit. Back in July this year, Facebook increased this limit to 500 characters. Just after a month, the limit was increased up to 5,000 characters.
Facebook’s Journalist Program Manager Vadim Lavrusik shares a picture on the social networking site, stating, “In September, we increased the character limit on status updates to 5,000 characters. Today, we're announcing that you can now write posts with more than 60,000 characters.”
In spite of the update, Facebook does not score over the newly launched Google+. Google's social networking site lets you post updates of length of about 100,000 characters. However,Twitter, another popular social networking site, allows users to post status of up to 140 characters.

Indian Army personnel asked to quit social networking sites

image description
The Internet companies such as Google andFacebook are facing a tough time in the country. They have already come under the government scanner over alleged offensive content and have been asked to set up a content monitoring mechanism. While the issue of web censorship is in court, the Indian Army has also joined the crackdown on social media. The Army has reportedly asked its personnel to do away with social networking sites such as Facebook and Orkut. Also, the Army personnel have been barred from joining these sites in future.
According to to reports, Army was facing difficulties while monitoring whether any of its personnel were leaking out sensitive information through these social networking sites. It's learnt that the Armymen have already been asked not to post any kind of information on such sites. Army was earlier also keeping a check on its officers if they were posting any pictures of themselves in uniform, weaponry or of their units on these sites.
It seems the Army has opted for an easy way by banning all personnel from joining such social networking sites in order to prevent information leakage. Do you support the move to ban Armymen from the social networking sites? Let us know in the comments section below

Google integrates its privacy policies and terms of service

In an effort to reduce the complications of having over 70 privacy documents and terms of service across their products, Google will be combining most of them to make a single overarching GooglePrivacy Policy and Terms of Service for most of its products, such as Google+, Google Calendar, Google search, Gmail, and YouTube.
The changes will go into effect on March 1, with the internet services giant notifying Google Account holders starting today via email, and a link on its search page. Google hopes to integrate its “different products more closely,” and deliver a “beautifully simple, intuitive user experience” across Google products.
Clarifying, Google says the new privacy policy will be written in a clear and easy to understand manner, explicitly detailing the user information the company may use to deliver personalized and individually relevant search results and advertisements. The aim will be to treat a user as a single individual across all of Google’s products.
The new move was announced on a Google blog post, with Alma Whitten, Director of Privacy at Google’s Product and Engineering division, insisting that Google’s treatment of privacy will not change. Users will still be able to migrate their data away, and be reassured that their data will not be sold or shared to any third-parties.
Google is also looking to provide users with more control about how their information is used, with services like Ads Preferences Manager a step in that direction. The company has definitely learnt from its mistakes with the launch of Buzz, when it inadvertently shared users' oft-used email contacts.

YouTube hits four 4 billion daily video views

Google's video sharing website, YouTube has achieved a few remarkable milestones – the site has surpassed 4 billion video views every day and over 60 hours of video upload every minute. To celebrate the milestones, Google has launched a new interactive website, called onehourpersecond.com. The new site features quirky animations and trivia to help users visualise how massive YouTube's figures are.
“Since the dawn of YouTube, we've been sharing the hours of video you upload every minute. In 2007 we started at six hours, then in 2010 we were at 24 hours, then 35, then 48, and now...60 hours of video every minute, an increase of more than 30 percent in the last eight months. In other words, you’re uploading one hour of video to YouTube every second. Tick, tock, tick, tock — that’s 4 hours right there!” announced Google on its YouTube blog.
Referring to the 4 billion video views milestone, Google pointed out that the figures are up 25 percent in the last eight months. “And the equivalent of more than half the world’s population watching a video every day, the same number as there are US $1 bills in circulation, the same as number of years since there was water on Mars...it’s a big number, and you’re making it bigger every day,” notes Google.

Facebook Announces New Apps for Timeline

After mixed reactions from users, Facebook has now declared that it's here to stay by opening up new apps for Facebook timeline.
According to Carl Sjogreen, Product Manager at Facebook, "We recently launched Timeline to give you a way to collect and rediscover your most important moments. Starting today, you can choose from more than 60 new apps to add to your timeline and express what you love.
Some of the new timelines that are available include Foodspotting,FoodilyTicketmaster,Pinterest,Rotten Tomatoes,PoseKobo, Gogobot, and TripAdvisor, among others. So whether you want to eat, travel, track reviews or watch a movie, Facebook would let you do all at peace.
Enhance your timeline with apps
It's now an effortless task to update your timeline with all your interest. These apps would add your interesting events, experiences and interests for you, as they happen. As Sjorgreen says, "If you love to cook, you can add the Foodily app to your timeline and share your latest dishes. If your friends have added the Foodily app, you can discover new recipes with each other, as you'll see their updates in the ticker and their timeline, and possibly News Feed.
If you're a traveler, you can add the Gogobot and TripAdvisor apps to bring a virtual passport to your timeline, and show your where you've been and share tips about your favorite spots from around the world.
Soon, there will be apps for all types of interests, as more apps will launch over time. Whether you love snowboarding, gardening, hiking, or knitting, or something else, there will be an app for you."

Best sub-20k smartphone for every OS

For a budget for under Rs. 20,000, there is a phone for everyone. What we have here is a listing of the best smartphones you can get between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 20,000, on each Operating System out there. The choice is literally endless, but here are the phones we think you should consider.
Windows Phone Mango: The new kid on the block
Samsung Omnia W: Windows Phone 7 is a completely transformed OS, ever since the Mango update arrived. I would go on to say Microsoft has managed to offer a better user experience than what Android offers, at least as far as the UI slickness and the ability to add a lot of visual goodness on hardware that Android would usually struggle to make a good impact on. The Omnia W walks the line of brilliance in terms of performance. The 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display, 5MP camera and 8GB internal storage make up the critical specs. Add an excellent battery life, and what you have is a very capable smartphone. Read a detailed review of the Samsung Omnia Where.
Symbian Anna: Will not walk into the sunset, without a fight
Nokia E6: Trust us when we say this, we were delighted to use the E6 when it was launched, back then in the summer of 2011. It was succeeding the hugely successful E72, which had the performance and class going for it. If you still are a fan of Symbian and want to stick with the OS, the Anna update is good news! The E6 has a lot going for it. A slim form factor, high quality build, very comfortable keypad, good display with a sure touchscreen, better than expected camera and an excellent battery life – the list of positives is quite long. On the flipside, the E6 is surprisingly heavy. We have seen the E6 retailing for about Rs 17k, and what you get for that money is a well-built smartphone with a touchscreen and physical QWERTY keypad. Those among is who cannot do without a physical keypad, this is a phone that you must consider. Read a detailed review of the Nokia E6 here.
Bada OS: Now in its teen years!
Samsung Wave III: If we look at the Wave III as an individual smartphone, it delivers on the two critical aspects - performance and build. However, you do begin to wonder at this point on how this is likely to compete against the likes of Android and now Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango). Since Bada OS is Samsung’s baby, it did take some time for the apps ecosystem to take off. And now it has, and as we speak, there is a complete transformation of the Bada App Store from what we saw when we had reviewed the phone. If you spend Rs 18k on this, you are surely going against the flow of Android and WP 7.5 devices. However, for the explorers of the tech world amongst us, this may just be a very interesting journey. Read a detailed review of the Samsung Wave III  here.
Android: Love it or hate it, but…
Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro: For a price of under Rs. 15k, what you get is a tiny little smartphone that doesn’t miss out on any features. The Mini Pro has a side slide out QWERTY keypad that builds on the surprisingly comfortable 3-inch touchscreen. While it may have reduced comfort during the touchscreen usage sometimes, the portability enhancement is something that cannot be missed. Android 2.3 is layered with the Timescape UI that has the edge menus as well. The performance thanks to the 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM is very good. And it is much better looking than the predecessor, the Xperia X10 Mini Pro, that just looked plain cheap, to be honest.
BlackBerry OS: Reinventing itself. Or at least is attempting to.
BlackBerry Curve 9360: For a company that is struggling to keep its grip on the smartphone market, it hasn’t lost its sense of classiness. The BlackBerry Curve 9360 is by far the best-looking Curve handset, ever. The moment you thought of a Curve smartphone, you would visualize a plasticky build quality and an iffy keypad. In this case, it is a combination of a sleek form factor, a classy finish, good display and a new OS. However, all is not well - keypad feels a little on the hard side and the battery will last you a day, at the max. However, for the consumer, we would recommend this simply for its extremely classy looks. Just makes the money spent all worthwhile, well somewhat! Check out the BlackBerry Curve 9360 review here

Samsung and Apple to use HzO WaterBlock technology

CES 2012 saw the unveiling of a new waterproofing process for electronic gadgets called HzO WaterBlock technology, which will could revolutionize the entire portable electronic device industry. The company is apparently already in talks with Apple and Samsung, to include the technology in their new smartphones, including the iPhone 5.
The HzO waterproofing technology uses water repellent nano-scale film barrier to coat the insides of electronic devices. The HzO technology was shown off extensively at CES 2012, with the company using demonstration devices from Apple, Samsung and Motorola – where the smartphones were dropped into a tank full of water, with no apparent signs of damage. Check out the video at the end of the article for a look.
According to a report by Pocket-lint, HzO is in talks with a major smartphone manufacturer and headphones producer, and will close the deals soon. This could mean HzO coated smartphones and headphones will be available by “next season”. The HzO technology in headphones would make them impervious to most environmental hazards, allowing them to be worn even when swimming.
HzO’s WaterBlock technology was acquired by ZAGG, a case & accessory company that has been around for a while. HzO was made into a private company, which was earlier intended to buy popular electronic devices, apply WaterBlock technology, and then sell them. Now, the company will probably licence the waterproofing technology to device manufacturers directly, for them to integrate it into their manufacturing processes.
We expect the technology can be applied to a wide variety of devices, and the near future will make for some interesting possibilities. Don’t expect devices, from watches to laptops, remain exactly the same in design however – as while HzO does protect the components of the device, manufacturers will still have to work on ways to keep water out completely, or remove it efficiently, to prevent long term damage to their devices.

Facebook introduces 60 new Timeline apps

Facebook has introduced 60 new apps, which allow users to share things such as photos, travel and destination on their new profile, Timeline. Users can already share the music they are listening or news articles they are reading via the new Timeline platform. The new Timeline Apps platform helps broaden Open Graph from its present multimedia integration into the social network to include travel, food, shopping, fitness and more. Unveiled back at f8 2011 event, Timeline Apps presently features more than 60 “lifestyle” apps, including eBay, Runkeeper, Urbanspoon, Tripadvisor and Rotten Tomatoes, allowing users to experience “frictionless sharing” on the social networking site.
"Our vision for Timeline and our vision for the application platform is whatever you love and whatever story you want to tell, you can add that to your Timeline," said Carl Sjogreen, director of product management for Facebook on Wednesday. "Our message to developers is 'start your engines'," Sjogreen added.

Timelines Apps obviously requires a Facebook user have the new Timeline profile. Facebook has also posted some information for developers about integration of their services with Open Graph and Timeline App.
Back in September last year, Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg launched the new Timeline profile for Facebook, focussing on the users' interests such as food, music, books, and places. There will be security settings available, allowing users to limit who will be able to follow their activities. Check out the new Facebook Timeline apps here.

HTC Sensation XE Review

rating
ratingratingrating
Exceptionally sensational! That is what the Sensation XE is, well and truly. It carries forward the good looks of the elder cousin, and just improves on that a teeny bit. The performance is massively different, and network loss/ death grip issues don’t plague this phone.

Pros

  • Feels classy, expensive and solid

  • Very good performance

  • Display good for multimedia viewing

  • Battery life helped immensely by the bigger battery

  • Cons

  • Quite pricey

  •

The HTC Sensation was touted as the rival to the Samsung Galaxy SII, and was launchedsometime around the launch of the SII. However, what it turned out to be was just another Android phone, but nowhere close to being the “SII-beater”. However, what has come around the bend now is something completely different, and better. The new  HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio is what the Sensation should have been like, in the first place.
    Look & Feel
The HTC Sensation XE builds on the extremely good-looking HTC Sensation, and then takes it forward a bit more. In the midst of the black finish, there is a tinge of red here and there - the illumination on the keys, the earpiece grille, the border around the camera and the Beats Audio logo on the back.
Below the 4.3-inch display are four touch sensitive keys - Home, Options, Return and Search. They are illuminated in Red, instead of white. However, unlike the Samsung Galaxy SII and the Galaxy Note, there is no way to customize how these will illuminate - never, always etc. The Volume rocker and the micro USB port are on the left side, while the 3.5mm jack and the power key are on the top. Flip the phone over, and you will immediately notice two LED flash next to the camera. To the right of the camera is the hands-free speaker. Press the battery cover unlock latch, and you realize that this one comes out in a lot more quantity than all other phones! No, you haven’t broken the phone!
We had loved the Sensation for the build quality and the classy feel it offered when you were holding the phone. The Sensation XE is even better than that, to say the least. Even though it is 3 grams heavier.
    Features & Performance
From the outset, you will see the Beats Audio branding on the packaging and even the phone. This is the result of the deal between HTC and Monster Cable Inc who make the Beats by Dr. Dre series of headphones and earphones. The result, apart from the branding is that a very capable set of earphones is provided with the XE, and a nice travel pouch to carry them in. Mostly all phones, even high end ones come with headsets/earphones that sound tinny to say the least. The XE, thanks to these special editions buds will work well as a portable music device.
Power has been given a huge boost as well, with the Sensation’s 1.2GHz dual core making way for a much more powerful 1.5GHz dual core processor. With 768MB of RAM helping it along, no wonder that Android 2.3 is on fire. Comparing it side by side with the Sensation, you immediately notice how much faster the XE is. Not all can be attributed to the extra power from the processor’s side though, and since the RAM amount is the same, we can rule that out too. HTC Sense seems a lot better optimized than the one on the Sensation. Flicking through it is a smoother experience on the HTC Sensation XE. We had to strip all widgets off the UI on the Sensation to make it come even close to the slickness of a widget loaded Sense on the XE. We specifically pointed to HTC Sense, and not on Android OS because we installed Launcher Pro on the Sensation, and its performance improved leaps and bounds once HTC Sense was disabled. Good to see that HTC is focusing on optimizing the Sense on the phones coming around now.
The 4.3-inch display is carried forward from the Sensation, and we do support the adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. The S-LCD display does well on all fronts - colour even-ness, brightness levels and crispness/ readability of text. Where it does fall behind the various avatars of AMOLED is the depth of black levels and colour vividness. Comparing it side by side with the AMOLED displays, and the colours do seem a bit dull. And it is interesting to note that the Galaxy SII has the Super AMOLED+ display, with a lower resolution, but looks a lot better, particularly for multimedia viewing. The capacitive touchscreen is very accurate, a case proved when browsing web pages. This is where the accuracy helps you while selecting the correct link first time around, and not the ones around it.
During the HTC Sensation XE review, we discovered that its he UI tweaks are quite useful, for the most part. Slide down the notifications bar and you will see an extra tab for Quick Settings, right next to the standard Notifications tab. Here, you can simply turn on/off stuff like Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth, GPS, the Mobile Network, access the full settings list and the basic task manager. The task manager on the SII is slightly more detailed, but even this one will do the job, manually.
While scrolling through the 7 home screens, you get the impression that they are spinning around on an axis, 3D style! The benefit of that is you can flip through all the screens, without every reaching the end and having to flick back again. Simply put, you come back to screen 1 after screen 7, and you can flick back to screen 7 straight from screen 1. The lock screen has some amount of goodness attached to it as well. There is a ring that you need to slide up to unlock the phone, as you normally would. Alternatively, you can configure the 4 shortcuts and drag an individual icon into the ring to unlock straight on that app. By default, you have calls, messages, mails and camera.
The on screen keypad on the Galaxy SII is slightly better than the one on the HTC Sensation XE. Not because the XE’s keypad misses out on anything, but because it tends to look a bit cluttered (read overwhelming, for the newbies) with multiple values assigned to every key. Having said that, we must appreciate that the keypad works very well in portrait and landscape mode - adequate spacing helps with typing quickly.
The 8MP camera has been carried forward to the HTC Sensation XE as well, and quite frankly, it is good enough for once in a while clicking or the occasional video. Colour depth is good, but light sensitivity is a little too much, resulting in considerable amount of graining and the washed out look.
We had explained in great detail in the Sensation’s review that it faces serious issues regarding network handling, call quality and signal drops. The HTC Sensation XE seems to have solved the problem. In areas where we used to find signals completely disappearing on the Sensation, the XE retained at least 1-2 bars.
HTC smartly fitted the XE with a bigger battery, and it was needed with the extra power on tap. Safe to compare this with the Galaxy SII - both will last 2 days on medium usage.
    Our Take
The HTC Sensation XE is well and truly a brilliant device. It leaves its elder sibling, the Sensation far behind - in terms of performance and being what it is supposed to be, a phone. Yet, brings along with it a superb build quality and a very classy look. The Sensation XE’s black mixed with a tinge of red at places makes the Sensation look a little bland. We think it is one of the best looking Android phones out there. Compares to the Galaxy SII in terms of sheer performance, but the extra Rs 2k or so that you will pay for the XE is mostly for the Beats Audio branding and headset.
